The average person here in the UK gets their only exercise walking from their house to their car. As soon as they get into their car, automatic transmission and power steering take over. At home there is a remote control for everything and even a self cleaning oven.
It seems like machines do everything for us lucky Brits. Is it any wonder then that so many of us are overweight with numbers rising sharply each year? Did you know that the UK is ranked 35th in the world for life expectancy? Over 120,000 Brits die prematurely each year from heart disease alone.
And even though 'officially' we're out of recession, unemployment is at its highest since 1994, and these are still stressful times we're living in.
Trouble is, every time you get stressed from deep within your brain, a chemical signal speeds stress hormones through your blood stream, priming your body to be alert and escape from danger. When the stressful situation ends, hormonal signals switch off the stress response...
Life can be rather overwhelming in our modern society and often, this stress response won't switch off. We have more things to do than we can handle. We have more choices to make than we have time to think. And while we try to juggle work, health and our relationships, we are constantly interrupted by hundreds of other things life throws our way.
Instead of feeling stress only about real dangers happening NOW, we feel stress about things that haven't even happened yet, may never happen and we certainly don't need the physical readiness that stress hormones were designed to create. As a result, stress hormones never leave our bloodstream, tissues or organs.
This creates many profoundly negative effects:
- Continual high levels of one stress hormone, cortisol, increases appetite and leads to weight gain. Overeating at night is also common among people who are under stress and leads to many serious health problems. Cortisol also creates a whole range of serious health problems by switching off disease fighting white blood cells.
- Stress hormones create digestive problems, inhibiting the release of stomach acid and emptying of the stomach and directly stimulating the colon, speeding up the emptying of its contents. This, too, creates health problems, some of them major.
- Stress suppresses the reproductive system at various levels, directly inhibiting the testes and ovaries, hindering production of the male and female sex hormones testosterone, estrogen and progesterone. This, too, leads to many health problems.
- Stress interacts with the immune system, making you more vulnerable to colds and flue, fatigue and infections - or worse
- Stress robs you of energy
One particularly damaging characteristic of chronic stress is melancholic depression. The body turns on the 'fight or flight' response - but is prevented from turning it off again.
This produces constant anxiety and over reaction to stimulation followed by the paradoxical response called 'learned helplessness', in which victims apparently lose all motivation. Hallmarks of this form of depression are anxiety, loss of appetite, lose of sex drive, rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol and tryglyceride levels.
Stress caused physical and emotional problems are spiralling out of control here in the UK. If you are an average Britain, chances are that you are well aware of these problems and are seriously willing to do something to prevent them happening to you.
The only trouble is you've dieted more times than you care to remember and gained back every pound you lost. And who on earth wants to be on a diet for the rest of their life anyway?
You've tried exercising too, but gave it up before it had a chance to do any good. After all, most exercises are hard and strenuous, not to mention that most of us don't have the time to do them and who really wants to go to the gym after a day at work? And let's not even mention those gym membership fees (ouch!)
The fact is that we are in very real danger of becoming a nation of weak, stressed out, fat slobs.
So where is the solution to our problem? Must we give up the good things in life we have struggled so hard for? Do we have to trade in our cars for bicycles, and our rich tasty foods for bland diets?
The answer is NO! Believe it or not, there is a way you can have your cake and eat it too. There is a way to be healthy and trim without working hours for it in a gym, buying expensive memberships, supplements or equipment (which if you are anything like me will quickly end up gathering dust and cobwebs in the garage or the loft).
Strangely enough the answer to the problem isn't new. It's over 1500 years old! The original Shaolin Monks of ancient China had a much worse problem than we do. Many were retired high ranking government officials and generals, they were intelligent men and woman (the founder of the martial art Wing Chun - Ng Mui was a Shaolin nun) who sat meditating and transcribing Buddhist texts all day long without hardly moving at all.
When the Venerable Bodhidharma (28th Patriarch of Indian Buddhism and 1st Patriarch of Chinese Chan/Zen) visited the Shaolin Monks he found them in very poor physical shape. Whilst many Buddhists at the time thought of the human body as a useless bag of bones, Bodhidharma took the view that a healthy body was essential for undergoing the rigours of Spiritual cultivation.
He taught them a series of exercises that became called the Shaolin 18 Lohan Hands which belong to a type of exercise called Qigong (also known as Chi Kung). Qigong combines gentle external movements co-ordinated with the breath and is performed in a meditative state of mind. It works the body without working up a sweat, practice takes just 15 minutes and you don't require any expensive equipment. They can be done almost anytime, any place and any where! Qigong was the answer to their problem and it is also the answer for us facing the trials of living today.
Okay, you've seen some pretty bold claims and statements in this letter and if I were you I'd be wondering...
And you're absolutely right to ask this question. Look, if I hadn't experienced the benefits of Qigong in my own life and witnessed with my own eyes 100's of people worldwide make incredible break throughs in their Total Health, there's no way I'd believe it was true. In other words, I know how you feel.
So let me put your mind at ease and share some findings from hard core scientific studies, because doctors and scientists have been extremely excited about Qigong since it's arrival here in the West. Here, finally, is an exercise that is easy enough for both young and old to do, beneficial enough to help control your weight and/or overcome depression (naturally without drugs), is easier to learn than Tai Chi and less strenuous than Yoga. Plus it requires absolutely zero athleticism.
Helping to control your weight is only one of Qigong's benefits. Here are some others:
- It stimulates better breathing supplying more oxygen to your body tissues. (It takes oxygen to burn up fat.)
- Qigong has a relaxing effect, almost like a mild tranquiliser, letting you sleep better at night and feel better in the morning.
- Blood pressure stabilises - over a 20 year period, blood pressure of a group of Qigong pratitioners stabilised, whereas that of the control group increased.
- Stroke and mortality rates decreased - in a study of hypertensive patients the mortality rate in the Qigong group was nearly half that of the group who did not practice Qigong.
- Cancer And Drug Treatment Improve - patients with "medically diagnosed malignant cancer" were divided into two groups. All received drugs, but one group also practiced Qigong. "Both groups improved, but the [Qigong] group showed improvement in strength, appetite, freedom from diarrhoea, and weight gain four to nine times greater than the control group".
- Senility Symptoms Improve - After six months, eight of the 14 main clinical signs and symptoms in the Qigong group had improved more than 80%, whereas no symptoms in the control group had improved more than 45%.
- Blood flow To Brain Increases. Memory Improves, Insomnia, Numbness, Vertigo, Headaches, and Cholesterol Decrease - Two studies show Qigong increases blood flow to the brain.
- Alpha Brain Waves Increase - Alpha brain waves are the key to stress relief, health, vitality and longevity.
The main conclusion from many studies is that Qigong enables the body to heal itself - Almost everyone can learn Qigong exercises for maintaining health and self healing.
Shaolin Qigong as practised by the orignal Shaolin Monks also gives the benefits of meditation which have to be read to be believed. Meditation dramatically lowers stress and stress related physical and emotional problems say research scientists in thousands of studies. Here are just a few of their findings:

Remember one thing...Qigong is not a gimmick. It has been recommended by hundreds of medical establishments and it really works. If you are really serious about losing weight and becoming physically healthy, if you want to overcome pain and illness, if you are lacking energy, suffer from the blues, constantly feel 'stressed out', lack confidence or find it hard to stop worrying all the time, Qigong may well be the solution to your problem.

Structure
The class size is limited to a maximum of 30 students to ensure I can pass on the essential skills to everyone. Now listen, because this is important. There are 2 major flaws with Qigong:
- It takes time - whilst you gain immediate effects (like feeling good, increased mental clarity, peace and tranquility etc.) from practicing Shaolin Qigong, to get real lasting value you need to practise daily. If you have a deep rooted illness, it will take 3 - 6 months before you notice lasting improvement in your health. Shaolin Qigong is no 30 day miracle cure.
